Understanding the Reciprocal Policy of the United States

Image

On April 2, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump, in his speech at the White House Rose Garden, announced reciprocal tariffs to be applied to 185 countries, including both allied nations and adversaries.

The United States and its trade partners currently impose different duties on the same products. The reciprocal tariffs will apply the same tax to U.S. imports as those imposed by other countries on U.S. goods, based on a product-by-product basis.

A reciprocal tariff is a policy where one country imposes the same or equivalent tariff that another country imposes on traded goods or services. This policy is typically applied in international trade relations, where countries set import tariffs that are either equal or mutually beneficial to facilitate trade. The aim is to create fairer trade relations between the countries involved.
